2017 Sunshine List: Transportation top earners

Every year Ontario government publishes its annual Sunshine List of public sector servants, which includes nurses, teachers, police officers, and firefighters, with six-figure salaries. In Transportation, 555 staffers made the list this year, earning a total salary of $63,687,161.78 in 2016.

At the top of the Sunshine List

Topping the list for Transportation was Deputy Minister Carol Layton who brought home $292,232.98 in 2016.

Following Carol Layton was Deputy Minister Stephen Rhodes, who had annual earnings of $237,382.82. Assistant Deputy Minister, Road User Safety Division / Sous-ministre adjointe, Division de la sécurité des usagers de la route Heidi Francis made $200,325.27, Assistant Deputy Minister, Policy and Planning Division / Sous-ministre adjoint, Division des politiques et de la planification John K. Lieou made $197,679.30 and Chief Information Officer, Transportation Cluster / Directeur de l'information, Groupement pour les transports Howard Bertrand round out the top-five highest-paid employees with $195,716.03 for the Transportation 2017 Sunshine List.

The Sunshine List

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, makes Ontario's public sector more open and accountable to taxpayers. The act requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.

In Ontario the Sunshine List was first published in 1996, by the Progressive Conservative government of Mike Harris. Just 4,576 names appeared on the first list.
