Ontario Public Sector Salary Disclosure - Sunshine List 2008

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996 makes Ontario’s public sector more open and accountable to taxpayers. The act requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.

Every year, the Ontario government publishes its annual Sunshine List of public sector servants with six-figure salaries. According to the document, University of Waterloo's 688 staffers made the Sunshine List, earning total compensation of $89,110,334.24 in 2007.

Topping the list for the University of Waterloo was President DAVID L JOHNSTON, who brought home $458,571.58 in 2007.

Following DAVID L JOHNSTON was Vice President, Academic/Provost AMIT CHAKMA, with annual earnings of $388,163.19. Professor ADEL SEDRA made $271,420.28, Associate Provost, Information Systems & Technology J. ALAN GEORGE made $244,420.72, and Dean, Mathematics TOM COLEMAN round out the top-five highest-paid employees with $233,634.02 for the University of Waterloo 2008 Sunshine List.

Breaking down the numbers

Among employees who received more than six-figure salaries in 2007, 155 received earnings between $100,000 and $110,000 followed by 430 who received between $110,001 and $150,000 , 92 received between $150,001 and $200,000 , 7 received between $200,001 and $250,000 , 1 received between $250,001 and $300,000 , and 3 received over $300,000 at the University of Waterloo.
