Ontario Public Sector Salary Disclosure - Sunshine List 2021

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996 makes Ontario’s public sector more open and accountable to taxpayers. The act requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.

Every year, the Ontario government publishes its annual Sunshine List of public sector servants with six-figure salaries. According to the document, Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade's 232 staffers made the Sunshine List, earning total compensation of $28,815,641.13 in 2020.

Topping the list for the Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade was Special Advisor, Agent General Ian Todd, who brought home $348,802.22 in 2020.

Following Ian Todd was Deputy Minister Giles Gherson, with annual earnings of $346,323.36. Assistant Deputy Minister, Regulatory Modernization and Business Relief Victor Severino made $232,439.25, Assistant Deputy Minister, Commercialization and Scale-ups John Marshall made $207,299.63, and Assistant Deputy Minister, International Representation and Promotion Alexandra Sutton round out the top-five highest-paid employees with $204,163.96 for the Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade 2021 Sunshine List.

Breaking down the numbers

Among employees who received more than six-figure salaries in 2020, 80 received earnings between $100,000 and $110,000 followed by 124 who received between $110,001 and $150,000 , 20 received between $150,001 and $200,000 , 6 received between $200,001 and $250,000 , 2 received between $250,001 and $300,000 at the Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade.
