Ontario Public Sector Salary Disclosure - Sunshine List 2022

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996 makes Ontario’s public sector more open and accountable to taxpayers. The act requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.

Every year, the Ontario government publishes its annual Sunshine List of public sector servants with six-figure salaries. According to the document, Energy, Northern Development and Mines's 172 staffers made the Sunshine List, earning total compensation of $21,190,679.81 in 2021.

Topping the list for the Energy, Northern Development and Mines was Deputy Minister Stephen Rhodes, who brought home $324,463.52 in 2021.

Following Stephen Rhodes was Assistant Deputy Minister, Mines and Minerals Division Susan Capling, with annual earnings of $226,318.59. Assistant Deputy Minister, Energy Supply Policy Steen Hume made $214,685.87, Chief Administrative Officer/Assistant Deputy Minister Scott Mantle made $212,314.62, and Assistant Deputy Minister, Northern Development Division Helen Mulc round out the top-five highest-paid employees with $210,557.15 for the Energy, Northern Development and Mines 2022 Sunshine List.

Breaking down the numbers

Among employees who received more than six-figure salaries in 2021, 66 received earnings between $100,000 and $110,000 followed by 87 who received between $110,001 and $150,000 , 14 received between $150,001 and $200,000 , 4 received between $200,001 and $250,000 , 1 received between $250,001 and $300,000 at the Energy, Northern Development and Mines.
