Ontario Public Sector Salary Disclosure - Sunshine List 2009

The Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, 1996 makes Ontario’s public sector more open and accountable to taxpayers. The act requires organizations that receive public funding from the Province of Ontario to make public, by March 31 each year, the names, positions, salaries and total taxable benefits of employees paid $100,000 or more in the previous calendar year.

Every year, the Ontario government publishes its annual Sunshine List of public sector servants with six-figure salaries. According to the document, University of Waterloo's 774 staffers made the Sunshine List, earning total compensation of $103,288,231.24 in 2008.

Topping the list for the University of Waterloo was President DAVID L JOHNSTON, who brought home $467,834.34 in 2008.

Following DAVID L JOHNSTON was Vice-President, Academic/Provost AMIT CHAKMA, with annual earnings of $408,456.36. Vice President, External Relations MEG LOUISE BECKEL made $315,976.00, Dean, Engineering ADEL SEDRA made $276,853.84, and Interim Dean, Graduate Studies J. ALAN GEORGE round out the top-five highest-paid employees with $254,523.24 for the University of Waterloo 2009 Sunshine List.

Breaking down the numbers

Among employees who received more than six-figure salaries in 2008, 154 received earnings between $100,000 and $110,000 followed by 460 who received between $110,001 and $150,000 , 142 received between $150,001 and $200,000 , 12 received between $200,001 and $250,000 , 2 received between $250,001 and $300,000 , and 4 received over $300,000 at the University of Waterloo.
